The Main Event

It was a fabulously sunny day and it couldn't have been any more perfect for a great ride out on the motorbike, bicycles and walk around Southery as everyone came together to make the day happen.

The Big Ride

Three new riders set themselves challenges to cycle around the circumference of Norfolk for Phil's Ride this year, joined by previous riders. This is also the last time Spike will be riding the big ride. Again.

The Saharra Dessert

The guys weren't really geared up for filming while treking across the dessert, but they captured some great images.

Sahara Desert Trek - Novermber 5th 2022

On the 5th of November David Beeton, two of his sons Jack and Lewis plus a great friend of the family Ben Layn will be walking 66 miles of the Sahara Desert in 35-40 degrees in aid of Philsride who support East Anglian Air Ambulance.

As many of you are aware this is a charity that basically helped to save our son Jack Beeton but unfortunately couldn’t help my greatly missed older brother Philip. Jack was saved by none other than Prince William who personally worked on him at the roadside!

David, Ben Layn and Callum Butcher have rode well over a 1000 miles on pushbikes raising money with the Philsride crew. They’ve ran half marathons, walked the 3 Peake’s and rode a bycycle from St Ives Cambridgeshire to St Ives Cornwall.

This will be special task for David personally as walking with Jack who had to learn to walk again and Lewis who had to deal with the mental stress of this should be a great (but hard) experience.

If anyone or any company could help to sponsor us we are going to take a banner with all messages and company logos on to show at our check points and places of interest, we did this on a bike ride and the response was unbelievable.

If it’s of interest we will look to start donations at £50 to cover printing etc. Thanks so much for taking time to read and support us, we have raised nearly £96,000 since the start of Philsride and I would love to hit the £100,000 in aid of the greatest charity

THE BIG RIDE - Aug 24th to 26th 2022

Every year we challenge a small team of cyclists to attempt a cycling challenge based in or around Norfolk. This years Big Ride is to cycle the entire circumference of the border of Norfolk over 3 days, a total of approximately 204miles. Unlike previous years, the route involves a more complete circumnavigation of the border of the county.

Our Cyclists this year comprise of returning riders Spike, Katie, David, Ben, Callum and Jamie. This year we've two guest riders in the guise of Becky and Sean who've never ridden anything like a 3 day 200+ mile challenge before.

The team of cyclists will set out from Southery in the morning of Weds 24th Aug and follow a route set out by our intrepid duo of motorcyclist pathfinders and aided by a small support crew for Great Yarmouth. Tuesday 25th Aug, the route follows the coastal road all the way to Hunstanton encountering the dreaded Bacton Hill at roughly the mid point of the whole ride. Friday 26th Aug has a comparatively 'light' day as the route winds through the West Norfolk back roads to arrive back in Southery some time mid afternoon - assuming all has gone well!

All expenses incurred are paid out of the pockets of the team and ALL MONEY RAISED will be added to our total for the EAAA. Be sure to show your support for the team of riders by visiting our Just Giving Sponsorship page

Phil's Ride 2022 Main Event
Sunday 28th August

This year will be a slightly more subdued event due to the obvious COVID pandemic however the main ride(s), live music, BBQ and evening should [hopefully] be largely unaffected. We will of course have to abide by any governement guidelines which may be subject to change on the day.

Taking Part
If you would like to take part and join in, no matter what form of 2 wheels you have, simply turn up with your steed of choice at the Old White Bell, Southery (PE380PA) from 11.00am [onwards] on Sunday 29th August 2021. (NB: Due to the popularity of the event, car parking will be congested, so we advise people arriving by car to park sensibly in the side streets, the extra parking facility opposite the Old White Bell and the Village Hall car park, located close to the playing field and of course be mindful and respect local residents.)

The Itinerary is as follows;

  • 11.00amRegistration opens Hand in any sponsorship forms and collect the loan of Phil's Ride High Vis (NB: For riders only.)
  • 12.30pm Motorcycles will ride a c.109 mile return route to Blakeney
  • 12.35pm Bicycles will ride a local return route to Downham Market to the Wimbotsham Chequers of c.20mile or complete the longer challenge to continue to The Heron in Stowbridge, a c.24mile ride. The exact route is TBA but will follow the previous years routes.

  • 3.30pm Mini ride starts for the up and coming cycling juniors lapping the pub car park

BBQ fires up, providing food at reasonable prices to patrons.

  • 4.30pm to 5.00pm Riders return
  • 5.00pm Live Music Starts
  • 10.30pm Close

All we ask for taking part is a donation in one of our two collection buckets upon arrival at time of registration of a suggested amount of £10, or if you'd rather sponsorship forms are available to download and print. All donations, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.

A "Phil's Ride - In Aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance" high-vis will be loaned to all riders (subject to availability) upon your registration. These have cost our sponsors quite a bit of money so please return this after your ride.

Bicycles
The bicycles will be organised into groups at registration for marshalling purposes consisting of Casual, Experienced and Enthusiast. The groups will have staggered starts to aid the marshals and the impact of the short ride on the A10 for other road users.

Should a cyclist be unable to do the full distance, simply wait for one of our support vehicles to take you and your bicycle back to the Old White Bell.

Walkers
New for this year is walking for Phil's Ride. The route is a simple 2 lap circluar route familiar to Southery residents called "The Common" and measures approximately 6 miles. Being a two lap route, the Old White Bell quite nicely is the end point as well as the halfway point.

Route details will be provided upon registration on the day

Motorcycles
The motorcycle ride will again be riding the c.109 mile to Blakeney as frequented so often by Phil and Jane on his bike.

We advise all motorcycles to brim their tanks before arriving. For those not familiar with the area, the nearest petrol station is Stone Cross, Downham Market, PE380AD to the north of Southery or BP, Littleport, CB61JJ if coming from the south.

The ride will be marshalled by riders in orange high-vis and will follow a fairly simple main road ride to Blakeney via Mundford and Swaffham, stopping at Blakeney where the burger van will [hopefully] be prepared for our arrival for a 40min stop. The half way fuel stop is at Wells-Next-The-Sea which will be on our return leg shortly after departing Blakeney.

The return leg will be almost the same as 2019's route via Wells-next-the-Sea, turning left after Holkham Hall estate, through Burnham Market, left at the duck pond at Stanhoe, through the CITB at Bircham Newton, Fitcham, Grimston, Gayton, East Walton, Narborough and then pick up the Swaffham Road near RAF Marham and back to Southery - however this may be subject to change. All being well, motorcycles will be entering the northern entrance to the village at roughly 4.30pm and will escort the cyclists the last few hundred yards back to the pub.

History
Phil's Ride started in 2016 as a memorial ride for Phil Beeton who sadly lost his life in an RTC in October 2015. Due to the swift action of the EAAA attending the RTC, they were instrumental in saving Phil's nephews life Jack.

Jack is alive today because of the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Phil's Ride has gone from strength to strength. The first ride in 2016 saw a pilgrimage of motorcycles undertake a return ride to Blakeney which is where Phil and Jane (Phil's partner) used to ride for leisure days out. Also on this day, not wanting to be left out because they didn't have an engine, a collection of cyclists rode a local route also in commemoration.

This first ride in 2016 set the precedence for the following years and every year we've rode in Phil's memory raising money for the EAAA with not just a large ride on August Bank Holiday Sunday, but other events throughout the year including car washes, BBQ's, bucket waving and cycling challenges undertaking by some of the team such cycling the 197 mile perimiter of Norfolk in 24 hours and cycling 397 miles from St. Ives Cambridgeshire to St. Ives Cornwall in 3 days.

So far, Phil's Ride has raised a total of £79,099.13 for the EAAA in 6 years and we'd like to think as the event grows, we'll be doing this for many more years to come.
